“a refreshing reminder that country music was once a credible form of art until Stadium Country went and fucked it all up”
“Soul of Slippery Butte takes the best of Old Guitars, but swaps the sensitivity for swagger”
“reminiscent of a dusty old thrift store 45 or something you’d find on an old eight track mixtape in a dusty cardboard box tucked away in your grandma’s basement”
Soul of Slippery Butte is the much-anticipated follow up to 2021’s critically praised Old Guitars & Shooting Stars. Old Guitars dove deep into Wolf Willow’s sensitive side—layered with lush strings and horns, the sweet orchestra sound defined this album and era of the band. Soul of Slippery Butte takes the best of Old Guitars, swaps the sensitivity for swagger, and combines pop-adjacent arrangements with compelling stories and timeless melodies.
The album explores a wide sonic universe, from Parsons-esque country rock to British folk/psychedelia with Sherill-style soundscapes scattered throughout. Stoneface Stanley steps into the role of lead singer on this record with a distinct vocal style that brings feeling to the forefront of each and every song. The record was engineered and mixed by Dana Rempel (Megan Nash, Bears In Hazenmore) and mastered by Barrett Ross. The full album was released September 10th, 2024 on Grey Records
